1999 Subaru Legacy strange shifint in DRIVE, but not in 3rd

When I put and leave my shifter in DRIVE, my transmission shifts hard and slips between gears.

However, if I put my gear shift lever in 3, NO problems whatsoever. What gives?

Is the dash indicators for the shift working properly when Drive is engaged?

Seems like something is not correct with thr inhibitor switch. An adjustment might solve the problem.
