I have a 2002 Subaru Impreza 2.5 TS Wagon AWD.
When the air conditioning is on and I am idling the car fills with a gas smell and cuts out. I have been told that I need some kind of charcoal filter, that is not replaced can catch on fire. What exactly is this part and where is it located on my car.

It is located on the right rear of the car, just in front of the sway bar. Is is part of the evaporative system that hold fuel vapors from releasing into the atmosphere.

The charcoal filled in the canister temporarily stores fuel vapors. When the purge control solenoid valve is opened by a signal from the ECM, the external fresh air entering the canister carries the fuel vapors into the collector chamber.
