1997 Subaru Impreza Engine Size unknown All Wheel Drive Manual 141000 miles

My Subaru (it's an Outback Sport actually) began to make a slight clicking sound a few days ago. I noticed that it become louder when there is less weight in my car (i.E. Gas tank is only 1/2 full, husband isn't in car, etc.).
It sounds like it is coming from the tire area on the front drives side or the engine due to the fact that it increases and decreases in speed when my car increases or decreases in speed. At low speeds (under 15 mph) there is no clicking sound.
On Friday it really wasn't that loud and I had to struggle to hear the sound. Now, I can hear it even if the radio is on.
Any ideas as to what it could be?

Check the front CV-Axle, the boot is probably ripped all the way around and most of the grease is gone by now. You will need to replace that axle!

Oh the excitement! The JOY! How much is that going to cost me?
I think it might be time to trade in my beast. It has been a great car but in the past 2 years I've put in over $2500 in repairs. The most recent was the worst oil leak I've ever seen. Cost over $600 to repair just that. And it happened on CHRISTMAS!

Well first thing is turn the wheel all the way to the left, then look at the part. Is it torn open? If so axles are about 80-00 or so, it's the labor that hurts most.

I'll check it as soon as I have a break today. Taking it to my auto repairman at 12:30 pm as well to look at it. (I don't use the Subaru dealers around here. They are horrible and way overpriced. My repairman is Subaru certified and is fantastic.)
As long as it is under $350 I should be good. If not. UGH!

Hey, thanks for your help. Seriously. It is very, very much appreciated by this here chick!

Go figure. You were completely right on the money. Car will be going in tomorrow for the new CV. Had to drive it home tonight, didn't have any other way home and I live 30 miles from work. (Husband is out of town on work.)

Thanks again! At least I was prepared for the worst of it!
