When the car is stationary with the ignition on and turning the steering wheel gently from left to right I can feel knocking through the steering column and in the left foot well. I also have play in the front left wheel in the 9 and 3 O'CLOCK position. I have replaced both inner and outer track rods and also had the wheel bearing checked which is fine. I can't see any leeks on the steering rack but was thinking it may be something internal.

Good morning,

Did you mean the tie rod ends? They are what give you play at 9 and 3 positions.

Yes, that's right. I have replaced the inner tie rods and the tie rod ends as shown in your diagram.

Okay, the next step is to be sure the mounting bushings are tight and not worn out.

Have someone turn the wheel and see if the rack itself moves left and right. That will tell you if the mounting is tight and the bushings are good.

I believe I can feel movement in the steering rack but can't be sure. If it is not the mounting what else could it be?

If that is not the issue, then check the steering shaft from the rack to the steering wheel. There are U joints and can lock up and make noises while turning.
