After installing a new rack, as I turned the wheel there was a pop sound and the steering started turning loosely?

I put a new rack in and got it aligned again. Then I heard a pop sound as I turned my wheel and my steering started turning loosely. Then I turned the wheel and heard the pop again and the stealing went back to normal. New tie rods are on, new wheel bearing, and new CV axle. I’ve replaced a good bit of stuff and cannot figure out why I hear a pop and lose steering. It’s not hard to turn either, I turn the wheel and it does it.

Hi,

Have you checked the ball joints? Also, is the rack tight? When you say the steering is loose, do you mean there is excessive play in it?

The idea that you just replaced the rack leads me to think that is where the noise may be coming from. If something isn't properly seated or isn't properly tightened, it can cause it to slightly move and make a popping sound.

Is it possible for a helper to turn the steering back and forth to create the noise while you try to narrow down where it is coming from?

If it is loud enough to record, please do so and upload it for me to hear. That may help me. Also, let me know if there are any noises when hitting bumps. If there is a suspension issue, it could cause a pop sound.

Take a look at this link:

Let me know.
