My starter went out and I had to replace it. Took old off out new one on. When I go to connect the battery cable the truck starts and thats without having the key in it. It makes a very very load grinding noise and sparks fly off the battery terminal

First check that the smaller wire on the starter solenoid isn't touching the larger battery cable connection. If it is not, unbolt it. If the problem continues the solenoid is stuck engaged.

What was wrong with the old starter?
