Starting issue

Am almost sure this is a starter problem, but doesn't hurt to double check. I have had my shares of BMW's and starters but not this one. Wife drove it 90 minutes one way and then back. Before she arrived she stopped to put some gas. Went to restart it didn't start. Lights come on, all dash lights come on, brought a jumper box with me in case, shows 12.35v. This has a push button, whenever I hit it nothing happens except for hearing the gear selector noise. I have brake lights, no leaks, no other issues. Tried disconnecting the BIS but forgot whether it is on the positive or negative side. Disconnected the small wire from negative but car didn't even come on when I turned ignition on. The small wire on the positive side was to come off so left it alone. Scanned the car after got home. As I expected there is a started code and another one for BIS, not sure if its because I disconnected the BIS or if it's bad, disconnected the battery and reconnected and tried same thing. One under engine one under cas. Starter relay a possibility? If the starter was visible without removing the intake I would have tried to hit it.

Hi,

At the battery itself, uncover both the positive and neg terminals. Inspect them for damage or failure to the starter and ground to the power monitor system. I can't remember which it was, but there is a connection there that can fail that powers the starter. I mention the neg because it can set this code if there is an issue to the power sensor. (See pic 1)

See pic 1.

If everything is good, you need to check for power to the starter solenoid. If there is power, it is most likely the starter.

Let me know what you find.

Hi,

NCA stands for no color available. Just a little extra help. LOL I'm referring to the IBS, intelligent battery sensor.

Checked the positive wire at the starter and it has juice, same for negative via touching the starter itself and connecting a test light to a positive source. But no matter what scanner I use or inpa it all comes back to code 2e8c, IBS sensor, function. Looked at the sensor looks okay no damage, connected a test light to the front jumping positive terminal and it has juice.

The IBS has two blue wires a big one which goes to the big red box on top of the battery and a small blue wire that goes no where. I can't trace it from the old one so left it u plugged. As far as I can remember this one is not functional and doesn't cause car not to start, seen it on many BMW's unplugged.

The bigger one on the battery is where there have been connection problems. The terminal fails.

Note that the vehicle has to sit at least 3 hours idle for the new sensor to work.

Take a look at the attached pic for wiring info. One to the battery and one fused. However, the NCA in the schematic indicates no color available, so I can't tell you if they are blue.

I see. I will check tomorrow to see where this other blue one goes to and I guess what you saying is that the big blue one as in the picture which connects to the top power box which is all positive wires has a fuse in the box that usually blow? I heard that before but I did not open it to see. That's because the front jump terminal and the starter both have power.

No, sir. According to the schematic, the one at the battery is ground. Power is supplied via the fuse in the pic.

Now, if you have power to the starter and (jumper?) S terminal when in the start position and the starter doesn't work, that sounds like the starter itself. If you jump 12v to the smaller wire on the starter, does it engage?

Let me know.

Glad you got it going. Are there any more issues with the battery sensor or has that resolved since you replaced the starter as well?

No issues, and I out back the ild sensor and it worked. Weird how it gave me a code for it but isn't bad, maybe because the battery was low? No idea. You know how complicated BMW's can be, stupid and smart at the same time. Thanks for your help.

My favorite is an Audi. One of the nicest vehicles to drive as long as they don't break. LOL Regardless, thanks for letting me know.

Take care of yourself.
