Okay, my starter went out and got another one off a 2003 Montero now the flywheel and pinion gear are not meeting right. I was going to install shims but do not know where to put there and what kind to get.

Hi,

Did you compare the starter to the one that came out? If they are the same then you should not need shims. You are most concerned with the depth of the arm and gear. If they are the same then I suspect the starter did not go in straight. I have done that in the past where it doesn't sit straight. Are you able to bolt it in place or does it not even bolt up?
