Will run and rev in park or neutral. Soon as I put in drive or reverse, it backfires and shuts off. Strong fuel smell. Changed crank sensor.

The very first step should be to check for stored codes. You can do that without a scan tool by jumping A and B of the diagnostic connector and reading the check engine light flashes.

After that I would test the fuel pressure with an accurate gauge.
