After radiator hose blew and overheated it sounds like compressed air escaping (ssp, ssp, ssp, ) when under a load until it shifts gears

My 16 year old son was driving our vehicle listed above and the top radiator hose burst blowing coolant all over the engine, actually all over everything. It was dark out and he didn’t notice the two inch tear in the hose. So he assumed it just overheated so he let it cool and added coolant to the reservoir and drove to a friends house nearby where he called me. He said the temperature gauge showed normal temperature so I told him to top it with coolant and try and make home about 17 miles. I told him to watch the temperature and pull over if it got hot. He made about half way. I had it towed home.
I found the burst hose the next day and replaced it and the coolant. Tried cleaning up as much of the engine as I could. The car started but was running very rough and throwing codes. I knew sensors were wet and the reason for it not running well. I disconnected and dried all the connections removed the coil packs and blew all the coolant from the plugs. Started the car again and it had a very noticeable miss. I read the codes to find the cylinders that were misfiring. I think 3 and 5. I went ahead and replaced all the coils and plugs. Started it again more codes. 02 sensors this time so I took a look at them and they were toast so I replaced them all 4. Start car and it runs great. Then I took it out on the highway and as soon as I accelerated quickly it made a very loud sound that I can only explain as the sound as someone pulling and releasing the trigger of an air nozzle the higher the RPMs the faster and louder the sound then the car up shifts and the sound stops until it time for the car to upshift again. This doesn’t happen when I rev the engine in park or neutral. My neighbor heard the noise and thought I had a plastic bag stuck under my car flapping in the wind. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case. Sorry for the length of this post but I want you to have the whole story. Thank you for your time. PS; I also replaced the MAF sensor.

Hi,

Does the sound only exist when the vehicle is moving? Is it loud enough for you to record and upload for me to hear? Also, can you tell approx where it is coming from? For example, does it sound like it's under the car, under the hood, in the vehicle, and so on?

When you replaced the oxygen sensors, are you certain they are not leaking?

Take a look through this link. It explains in general how the sensors are replaced. See if there is anything you could have missed.

Yes, it only makes the sound while moving. If I drive on a flat surface and do not accelerate to fast it will drive and shift normal. If you have to push the pedal down to go up a hill or pull into traffic it’s anything but normal. It was making this sound before I put new 02 sensors on and though it was a tight fit I’m sure they are properly installed. The check engine light was on today I uploaded a screenshot. I ran it live mode while I was driving making the video so hopefully you can hear the sound. Everything was within the normal range according to my scan tool. This video was on a pretty bouncy road with a couple decent hills. I hope you can hear it. Thank you for your help. I have one week to get this thing running or I’ll have to buy another car for my 80 mile one way commute to work.

Hi,

I believe I heard it. It sounded like a rattlesnake. Is that correct?

I looked at the codes. The EGR sounds like it is stuck open, which can cause issues. Also, the P0420 which is related to the catalytic converter is pending. By any chance, does the vehicle feel like it has lost power?

Let me know.

Joe

Yes, the rattlesnake sound is the issue. It’s much louder in person especially if your outside the car. As far as the power loss goes I would have to say yes it’s lost some power but we have been really gentle on it when we must drive it usually only a few miles round trip and that’s usually my son driving it. I’ve search for loose hoses and connections multiple times and can’t find anything.

I am thinking it may have to do with the catalytic converter and the noise is caused by an air blockage. Please bear with me. It's hard to diagnose not being there.

Take a look through this link that describes common symptoms related to a converter issue:

Let me know if the things discussed mirror what you experience.

Take care,

Joe
