My 2002 SL2 starts everytime with no problems. However recently, immediately after it starts there is a clanging sound that lasts less then a second. It sounds like the noise is coming from the area where the starter is. And it doensn't make the sound with every start. I can go 15 starts in a row without hearing it but then it will happen 3 times in a row. What could this be? Thank you.

Wow! THat could be many things. I would like you to try something and let me know what you find. Take a rubber mallot and tap on the exhaust system. Listen closely near the catylatic converter to see if you hear the sound. I think that maybe the converter may have come loose inside. Also, since the sound seems to come from near the starter, make sure it isn't loose.

Let me know what you find.
