2001 Saturn SL2 Gears will not engage

After starting the car the shifting from park all gears except park act like neutral. When shifting the gears the engine's idle increases for a couple of seconds (like when going from park to drive and then drive to reverse). Before there was a rattle noise while in gear and now that rattle is gone. Any help is appreciated.
