1996 Saturn SL2 battery light

My battery light is coming on at low rpm. There is also a whining noise.

Do u have a voltmeter if u do check ur battery voltage at idle u should have close to 13 or above. It sounds like u havea bad alternator. Turn on ur headlights a/c all that let car idle check ur voltage at idle let me know what voltage u have.
