Well I would have to take a guess at what happen because iam not there to see what damaged u caused but from what u describe u probably sheared ur differntial roll pin. To repair it u would take the transmission out replace just the differntial as long as there is no other damage.I have seen that differntial come apart and come right thru the transmission case then u would need a case too. The reason this happens is when u slip in the snow or ice u get alot of rpms on ur output shaft in ur transmission which turns ur diff then when u get traction it causes alot of stress to that diff pin which is the weakest link then snap. Well let me know what they find iam pretty sure iam right. Might be cheaper to find a used transmission then fix that one.

I doubt its the axel there pretty strong when one breaks u atleast have one wheel spinning.U said nothing happens in gear thats most likely the differntial I have seen alot of them fail under the conditions u mentioned.I have replaed alot of them and even the cases from the pieces of the diff come thru it. Its 16.6hrs labor times the labor rate of the shop which is usually 80-100 per hr. Plus alignment its over 400 just for the diff plus gaskets fluid sealer etc. Pretty expensive thats why I said it might be alot cheaper just to put a used trans in it. Without seeing it or alot more details thats the best I can tell u right now. Iam factory trained in these trans by saturn I know them really well and have been inside alot of them. Let me know how it goes and what u find.
