Engine Mechanical problem
1994 Saturn SL1 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 100K+ miles

Belt was squeeling loudly as if there was water on it. It would quit squeeling after a few minutes or after guning it and reving the engine. Tonight as I pulled into the parking space it gave a loud chirp. I noticed at this time that the altenator light came on and the power steering stopped working. The enginge still runs fine, the air conditioner still works if turned on (it even gives a little squeek when it comes on). I checked the unibelt and it is intact.

Sounds like u have a bad belt tenisor put a wrench on it and see how much tenision it has that's the only thing I have ever seen go bad with that problem. Also I recomend using a factory one I tried using three differnt brands of aftermarket ones on a friends car two were rattling when u excellerated and third one when I put it on the belt could be pulled off with my hand had no tension at all there expensive but there worth the heartache u will save. Hope this helps. Also donations and feedback greatly appreachiated.

The belt is tracking true and everything is spinning. I am as close to broke as a body can get and still drive a car and don't have a lot of dough to blow. Is it realy possible to have everything spinning and the altenator and power steering to not work? It just doesn't make sense to me.

I was thinking the tensioner while it was making noise but when the two components mentioned earlier went out I thought it had to be something different.

Well u only have one belt that drives everything what doesn't make sense is ur a/c works but ur powersteering doesn't u may have two differnt problems let's hope u don't considering u are as broke as me. Because if u have no powersteering and ur pump is spinning and ur fluid is full that is usually a bad powersteering pump which they usually don't go bad that often. If ur belt is slipping but the belt still looks tight then u have a weak tenisor that's the only thing that keeps ur belt tight. They usually give worning before they go out. When it does go out u will be stranded becuase ur alternator won't turn or ur water pump and u don't want to drive it with out ur water pump spinning. Since ur so broke I would check to see if u can tell if ur tenisor is weak with a wrench I bet it is though I have seen alot go bad. They have to wear out sometime. If it is bad then u can try to find one at pick a part some place u go and find parts u need and remove them urself that's a cheap place to get parts an u could even find a powersteering pump if u needed it. Let me know what u find.

Yes, there is something a bit odd going on here, as Louie has advised its a bit strange that the A/c is working but no alt and no power steering, what I would like to know is the alternator output voltage (if any) and with the engine running and the power steering cap off, turn the steering wheel and see if there is obvious oil movement that would indicate pump operation.

Yeah but this whole deal sounds really crazy to have the powersteering pump and the alternator go out at the same time just as u hear the belt squeling is like the odds of winning the 100,000,000 lotto but in a bad way if u have that kind of luck then I feel pretty lucky then lol. Would like to hear a update on how ur doing.
