Sticky oil control rings

Hello,

I have a 95 Saturn SC2 with 177k miles. I fixed my a/c after replacing a shorted wire from the pressure switch, I appreciate your help! But now I need to know about the oil control rings. If these are gunked up, could this lead to excessive oil consumption and a very smokey exhaust? I believe my compression may be low and could the dirty oil control rings be contributing to that situation? I do not belive that my head gaskets are very bad because there is no oil in the coolant and no coolant in the oil pan, everything is clean in those areas. I just have alot of smoke and consume about half my oil in a week with average, small town driving. Lastly, should I use a cleaner for my situation and what would be good to use? Thanks for your help. - Garrett D.

That definitely sounds like rings to me, thats the only defense against burning oil for an engine.
I'd have someone check the compression in the cylinders and that will tell you more than anything else

I have limited experience though, so I'm pretty sure you can get better advice.

Make sure you have an oem PCV valve. Check for oil leaks. Saturn sells a ring cleaner and GM top end cleaner. A less expensive alternative is marvel mystery oil. The procedure includes using mobile 1 synthetic oil for its advanced cleaning capabilities.

Do a compression test to be sure first tho. Could have a bad valve seal, etc.

Good luck and let us know. :)
