Sound in timing area

I have a 1999 saturn sc2 1.9 dohc. There is a sound coming from the timing area. It sounds like a piece of plastic. Does anyone know what it could be

Hey Jon,
What does a piece of plastic sound like? Need to narrow it down a bit. Is it with the engine running? With the car moving? You get the idea.

Noise from the timing side of the engine can be narrowed down to either internal or external. Remove the serpentine belt and try spinning all the diferent pulleys. Look and listen for anything rough, tight or loud.

Next start the engine without the belt. Is the sound still there. Yes means something internal like a timing chain or tensioner. No means it is one of the pulleys. Could be any of the accessories such as the alternator, AC, or power steering. Also be sure to check the belt tensioner and any idler pulleys.
