Hi and thanks for taking my question. I have the vehicle listed above that needs to have the Steering Rack and Pinion replaced. I've been quoted $2,600.00 to do it at the dealer. I have a private mechanic who can replace it if I buy the part, but he does not have the Ford computer to program the new Rack. My question(s), if I pull a rack from a used Explorer that is in the same model year group does it still need to be programmed? If I buy a new rack, what is required to program it? Can I use a laptop, the FDS software and the file from Motorcraft website and a pass through USB to ODM connector cable to program it myself?

First you will need to program any changed part into the steering system new or used. Yes, you can reprogram the system yourself by using your laptop and the correct files and program from ford. Here are the instructions on how to change the steering rack out so you can see how the job is done. On a side note, do not turn the steering wheel with the rack disconnected because it can damage the spiral wire inside the steering column. Check out the images (below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Thanks for your quick reply. An Independent mechanic I know has told be the programming needs a special tool and that you can't program it at home.

Yes, you need the correct scanner to replace the steering rack. The dealer is usually the only one that has one.
