In a day the car suddenly started running rough, rpm bouncing, at idle 2 times as it stopped it quit running. The code reader said P2096. My son replaced the oxygen sensor, fired it up and it has a smooth idle and runs great. The engine light went off. Took it 5 miles at 60 MPH and pulled off the road and it was overheating. New code P0031, not sure what to do next.

This is what is said about the code p0031

The P0031 code on a 2010 Subaru Outback indicates a problem with the oxygen sensor heater circuit for the bank 1 sensor 1.

So, it looks like the front oxygen sensor is bad/defective here is the location of the sensor and instructions so you can check it out. Also make sure the cooling fan is plugged in which it might have been undone in the first repair. Check out the images (below). Please let us know what happens.
