1998 Renault Clio Broken Cambelt

While my Renault Clio 1.9 Diesel was stationary the engine cut out with a slight clunk noise from the engine and when the road recovery guy arrived he said the cambelt had broken. What are the chances that this hasn't damaged the engine and is there any way of checking, would a mechanic be able to tell quite quickly with out to much work or is there anything I can do to check, I only need the car for another month any suggestions would be much appreciated- thanks in advance

Hi,

I was travelling at 70mph on a dual carriage way when my cam belt broke on my 1998 clio. This only bent two valves and did not damage my engine at all.

Therefore I am guessing that there is probably only a couple of bent valves if anything. If you know a good mechanic you could get it done for around  250.

The belt snapping on this engine will definately do damage. It doesn't matter what speed the car is doing. Could be 1 MPH or could be 100 MPH. What matters is the position of the valves in relation to pistons when the belt snap's. In other words without stripping down the engine your mechanic cannot tell you the extent of the damage. Sorry.
