The transmission oil was drained in error.
The transmission does not appear to have a dip stick.
A breather type valve was located close to the engine on top of the gear box. See photo and video)
Is this where fluid can be re filled?
How does one know when the level/amount is correct?
Cannot load video.

The breather is plastic and black in color about a 17mm size.

Hi,

Here are directions for refilling the ATF. Note this came from the service section, so you will need to judge how much was originally removed. The attached pics correlate with the directions and the second set of directions are for checking level.

Connecting hoses

pic 1

Remove the oil line (1) between the transmission cover and the oil cooler.

Hint: The quick-release connectors for the oil line are detached by pressing the clutch housing towards the cover/oil cooler. Hold the connection housing in this position. Pull back the lugs on the connection housing. Pull the connector off the cover/oil cooler.

Connect a hose (2) to the return pipe sleeve connector on the cover. This hose is used to fill with oil.
Install a transparent plastic hose (3) on the oil cooler connecting sleeve, which runs down into a container.

Filling with transmission fluid
Apply the parking brake. Move the gear selector lever to position P.
Fill approximately 2 liters of oil through the hose connected to the transmission cover.
Start the engine. Allow the engine to idle so that the oil pump for the transmission pumps out the oil. Turn the engine off when air bubbles start to become visible in the hose.
Fill approximately 2 liters of oil again as described above. Start the engine again. Allow the engine to idle so that the oil pump for the transmission pumps out the oil. Turn the engine off when air bubbles start to become visible in the hose.

Further filling of transmission oil

Fill approximately 2 liters of oil through the hose connected to the transmission cover.
Remove the hoses from the oil cooler and the transmission cover.
Connect the oil line between the oil cooler and the transmission cover.

CHECKING OIL LEVEL
Transmission oil level - checking

Note! The illustrations in this service information are used for different model years and/or models. Some variation may occur. However, the essential information in the illustrations is always correct.

Warning! Take great care when the vehicle is raised, the splashguard under the engine is removed and the engine is running. Watch out for rotating components on the engine and the radiator fan. Be especially careful with your hair and fingers.

Warning! Avoid skin contact with the oil.

Note! Only use transmission oil with Volvo part no: 116 1540-8 (1-litre), 116 1640-6 (4-litre).

Check

Conditions

pic 3

The difference between MAX and MIN volume is 0.3 liters. Check the oil temperature in the transmission.
At room temperature (+20 °C) the oil level is near the MIN marking on the "cold area".
At room temperature (+20 °C) and low oil level the oil barely reaches the dipstick.
The "cold range" (+40 °C) is reached after approximately 15 minutes idling in the workshop, while the "hot range" (+80 °C) is reached after approximately 30 minutes highway driving at an air temperature above +15 °C.

Note! Carry out the check at an oil temperature of +80 °C. Select the digital display parameter. Select the parameter for the transmission oil temperature.

Preparing to check the oil level
Position the car on a hoist.
Apply the parking brake.
Apply the foot brake.
Let the engine idle.
Set the gear selector in position P. Move the gear selector through the various gear positions, stopping for approximately 3 seconds in each position.
Return the gear selector to position P. Wait 2 minutes before checking the oil level.

Checking oil level

pic 4

Allow the engine to idle with the gear selector in position P.
Raise the vehicle. Remove the splashguard from under the engine.
The dipstick must be pushed down completely in the dipstick tube.

Caution! Wipe off the dipstick with a nylon cloth or similar. Do not use a rag which may leave lint or threads.

Low level (topping up)
Top up with oil through the dipstick pipe. Take the temperature into account when topping up with oil.
Check the oil level again. See: Checking oil level.

High level (overfilling)

Warning! The oil may be very hot if the vehicle has just been driven. Avoid skin contact with the transmission oil.

Warning! The transmission must not be operated if the oil level is too high. This can cause increased operating temperatures and oil leakage.

Pic 5

Note! Strict cleanliness is important.

Drain off oil.
Undo the drain plug.
Allow some of the oil to drain out and reinstall the plug. Tighten. See: Tightening torque See: Automatic Transmission/Transaxle > Mechanical > Tightening Torque.

Hint: The oil can also be sucked out through the dipstick pipe using an oil suction syringe with a narrow gauge hose.

Check the oil level again. See: Checking oil level.

Finishing

Installing the splash guard
After checking, install the splashguard under the engine.

Thanks for the info. Further research has the below comment. I still cannot locate the dip stick. I have looked under the battery after removal, Below the intake pipes and searched?

Hi,

The only thing I'm not sure about is the engine size. You listed a 2.0L which wasn't offered. I went with the 2.4L. Is that what you have?

Also, I went back a year and forward a year and they all show the dipstick. I was thinking there may have been a mid year change. It should be near the firewall on the driver's side of the vehicle.

Let me know.
