My truck is a 1500. I would like to to put a 2005 rear end in it even though it is 1" shorter than the 2008. Will it work or do I have to do some modifications?

Good morning,

No, it will not. You need the exact differential with the exact dimensions.

Otherwise, the truck will not track correctly and the ride will be affected.

The gear ratio must also match the front as well.

The gear ratio in my truck was a 3.72. I want to put in a 3.41 ratio. The carrier gear is the same size but the pinion gear is just one tooth more than the 3.72. What would happen?

It would not stay in four wheel drive. It would pop out and damage the transfer case.

The gear ratios must be the same. You need to find an exact differential to replace.
