Many variable here.
First check level or coolant in cooling system.97 GP should be a plastic yellow looking reservoir with black plastic cap on it. Let it cool before opening. It can steam/gush out when hot.
Fill it up with 50/50 coolant from the store. They have the universal stuff now or you can add green even if the car came with Dexcool.
After you get it full start it up and watch the gauge. And the front cooling fan.
The fan should come on when the gauge gets above 1/2. It should definitely be on by the time the gauge gets to 3/4.
If fan works. Then you could need a new thermostat. At engine end of top radiator hose inside of thermostat housing. Aluminum domed peice with two bolts holding it on IIRC on a 97 3.1.
It is sideways and behind the exhaust header pipe and the bottom bolt is hard to get to.

The most likely problem is low coolant level. Fans being number 2.
If fans do not come on. There are fuses and relays in the fuse/relay center on passenger fenerwell near headlight.
