I was told I should not jump start my 6 cylinder 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix with my 2004 4 cylinder Chevy Cavalier. By doing so I could damage my Cavalier. That jump starts should only be done with like cylinder engines - 4 to 4, 6 to 6, 8 to an 8. Doing otherwise may damage the smaller cylinder engine. Is this correct?

No it is NOT true, in the sense that they must be the same number of cylinders.
As long as it is a 12V negative ground system it is OK to jump.
Just be sure to get the polarity correct (+ to + and - to -)
