Erratic Idle and stalling

My daughter has a 1998 Pontiac Grand Am with the 3100 V6 and has 87K miles on it.

The car runs perfectly with this exception, the temp gage is erratic. After warming up, when coming to a stop the gage will intermittently jump from pegged at the bottom to what looks like a normal temp, then drop to the bottom again. As it drops the idle will surge up. After this happens, 9 out of 10 times, it will stall the next time you take your foot off of the accelerator.

The check engine light is on and the error is that the temp sensor detected a hi input.

I found and replaced the sensor and the gage worked for about 10 seconds then down she went again.

UPDATE(8/15/2007): Traced the wiring from the sensor into a connector in the wiring harness and found that one of them was broken and only making occasional contact. Will be looking for a connector to replace the broken one. I'll update when I have done so to let you know if it worked.

UPDATE 2 (8/16/2007): Couldn't buy a connector for under $24 so being the cheap dad I am, I rebuilt the connector and shazam. My daughters woes are over. I did notice though that it looks like the wiring on this thing has been redone a number of times so I'll probably be back looking for help again sometime!

Be sure it is full of coolant. Try wiggling the wiring harness with the engine running to see if there are any breaks or damaged wiring in the harness. Look for anything that might rub the harness
