I have a chance to get a 1995 3.1 engine and would like to install it into a 1997 grand am with a 3.1 Have been told that 94&95 3.1 engines are different than 96&97 3.1 engines

Yes, while the engines may look the same the PCM's are different. The 95 is an OBD1 while the 97 is an OBD11.

You may be able to use the long-block, but not the complete engine. Look for any sensors on the 97 block and heads that are not on the 95. If none, then use intake manifold, exhaust etc. From the 97.

Thanks for the info, I will do a little more checking on the two different year engines when I possibly can getbthe cars side by side. As far as you know, the flywheel and transmission are the same? I would be able to change the manifolds if that is necessary.

Yes the engines will bolt up, the problem will most likely be a different crank/cam sensor and/or location, and other sensors like knock sensor for example.

Look at them together, you may be able to use the old PCM on the new engine or visa versa.
