Engine Performance problem
1996 Pontiac Firebird 6 cyl Automatic

estimate cost to fix heads, parts and labor. Was run hot. Smokes when cranked. Can't drive. Tight budget. Best place to take it to have it fixed and if I choose to get someone to do it for me any suggestions? Thanks

You can either find used heads at a salvage yard or a used engine at a salvage yard.
The only problem is that the salvage yard would only warranty the parts with replacement parts (no labor).
Look around for a local garage and talk to them about this, see what they suggest and explain you do not wish to spend a lot of money on the car.
Most will work with you, but you are probably looking at around $1500 in either case.
You want to make sure the block is in good shape (no coolant in the oil) before you just replace the heads.
