How long has it been since the car had a tune up? Spark plugs/wires/coils could be bad. If the check engine light is on, there is a trouble code(s) stored in the PCM (Computer) memory. Reading the trouble code should give you a good idea of whats causing the problem. If you don't have a reader, you can take the car to Auto Zone and the guys there can read the codes free of charge. Good Luck!
