1995 Pontiac Firebird Steering

I have a 1995 Pontiac trans am with the lt1 5.7 engine the steering colunm is messed up we took it out to replace starter switch and it want line back up to bolt up. So we took it all the way out and about half way up on it there is a place where there is a smaller sleeve going into the bigger one it came out some showing silver where there is no paint and it want go back in so we can put it back in. How do u get it back in if possible a link showing picture of it thanks.
