I have a 3.4L SFI engine.

I just purchased this car for my son. It was in good working orderlast week when I drove it home. Today it has started to idle at 3000rpm. It does not go down. When I opened the gas door to put gas in, I observed a rag in place of the gas cap. I am going to get a gas cap tomorrow. How do I turn the idle down if it is not due to the gas cap? Thanks

Clean out the idle air control valve and see what happens.

Mine did the same thing and it idled @ 2800 all you gotta do is pop the hood and in that little v on top of the engine there will be a hose that connects to the engine and has to hoses running off of it too. Just check that hose to make sure it is properly put in. Mine popped off when I was starting it and it idled like that and when you put it into gear it goes down again but that should fix your problem.
