My check engine light has been on ever sence I got the car, I found a wire that goes to the carb and when I plugged it in the car quits but the light goes out on it. What would be the problem?

If the check engine light is on, there is a code stored in the computer that will identify where the problem is coming from. Have the computer scanned. I believe it is an OBD1 which just requires you to jump two leads.
