Engine Mechanical problem
1984 Pontiac Firebird V8 Automatic 184000 miles

I am replacing the timing chain and gears. Took out the old and after lining up the marks on the gears. Went to replace the gears and when they were not exact my son turned the crank several times and now my question. How can I find where the cam is in relationship to the crank before I put this back together?
The cam gear dot is exactly at 6:00, the crank gear dot exactly at 12:00.
the number one piston is not at the top (it is at the bottom) and the rotor on the distributor is not on the number one spark plug wire, but towards the firewall.

Thank you all for your input. Orighinally I was looking for (and got) help with the timing gears set up on my 1984 pontiac fire bird. I was just afraid to close up the motor and be wrong and it was making me paranoid. But I closed it up and once all together, turned the key and the motor started up as if it was a new car. Timing is on mark. I only need to tighten the alternator belt.
