I currently have a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am, 400 ci V8, with three speed auto and want to change to a four-speed manual shift which was an option for my auto from factory. What is the process and is this a hard and laborious process? Thanks!

It can be done and yes it will be laborious. I have no idea where you would find a how to search the net outfit called Year One maybe helpful.
