Transmission problem
1998 Plymouth Breeze 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 185K miles

Only on a warm day or driving over 30 miles the trans will force a downshift to 2nd (below 45mph) It then starts in and stays in 2nd. Turning off the engine and restarting will "fix" the problem, sometimes for 5 minutes, sometimes longer. Other wise the trans works very well with no slipping or harsh shifting.
Other trouble code that came up was P1782.

You would need a scantool capable of commanding the solenoid pack on the transmission, but here is the test for code P1782:
TEST 21: OD PRESSURE SWITCH CIRCUIT 1. If DTC 35 is also present, ignore DTC 21 and go to TEST 35: LOSS OF PRIME . If DTC 35 is not present, go to next step. 2. Turn ignition off. Disconnect transmission solenoid pack harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and OD pressure switch sense circuit at transmission solenoid pack harness connector. If resistance is greater than 400 ohms, go to next step. If resistance is not as specified, go to step 4). 3. Turn ignition on. Using scan tool, monitor OD pressure switch status. Using a fused jumper wire, momentarily tap OD pressure switch sense circuit to 12 volts. If OD pressure switch status on scan tool display toggles between OPEN and CLOSED, go to step 7). If scan tool display is not as specified, go to step 6). 4. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TCM harness connector. Measure resistance between ground and OD pressure switch sense circuit at TCM harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair OD pressure sense circuit for a short to ground. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step. 5. Measure resistance of OD pressure switch sense circuit between TCM harness connector and transmission solenoid harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, replace TCM. If resistance is not as specified, repair open in OD pressure switch sense circuit. 6. Turn ignition off. Disconnect TCM harness connector. Turn ignition on. Using a fused jumper wire, connect 12 volts to OD pressure switch sense circuit at transmission solenoid pack harness connector. Measure voltage between ground and OD pressure switch sense circuit at TCM harness connector. If voltage is greater than 10 volts, replace TCM. If voltage is not as specified, repair open in OD pressure switch sense circuit. 7. Turn ignition off. Remove jumper wire. Disconnect TCM harness connector. Measure resistance between transmission control relay output circuit and OD pressure switch sense circuit at TCM harness connector. If resistance is less than 5 ohms, repair transmission control relay output circuit for a short to OD pressure switch sense circuit. If resistance is not as specified, go to next step. 8. Reconnect TCM and transmission solenoid pack harness connectors. Connect a 300 psi (21 kg/cm 2 ) pressure gauge to OD clutch pressure test port. See TESTING in CHRYSLER 41TE/AE & MITSUBISHI F4AC1 overhaul article. Turn ignition on. Raise and support vehicle. Depress brake pedal and start engine. DO NOT allow wheels to turn. Place gearshift lever in "OD" position. Increase engine speed to 1400 RPM. Using scan tool, actuate OD solenoid. Observe pressure gauge reading. If pressure fluctuates from less than 5 psi (.35 kg/cm 2 ) to 75-95 psi (5.3-6.7 kg/cm 2 ), replace transmission solenoid pack. If pressure is not as specified, go to next step. 9. If pressure rises to greater than 5 psi (.35 kg/cm 2 ), go to next step. If pressure does not rise to greater than 5 psi (.35 kg/cm 2 ), replace transmission solenoid pack. 10. If pressure ever falls to less than 5 psi (.35 kg/cm 2 ), go to step 13). If pressure does not fall to less than 5 psi (.35 kg/cm 2 ), go to next step. NOTE: Perform PRE-DIAGNOSTIC CHECKOUT before proceeding with this test. See RETRIEVING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES under SELF- DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
11. Ensure all valve body bolts are tightened to specification. See CHRYSLER 41TE/AE & MITSUBISHI F4AC1 overhaul article. Tighten if necessary and go to step 13). If all bolts are tightened to specification, replace transmission solenoid pack and go to step 13). 12. If pressure ever reaches 75 psi (5.3 kg/cm 2 ), conditions required to set DTC 21 are not present at this time. If pressure does not reach 75 psi (5.3 kg/cm 2 ), replace transmission solenoid pack and go to next step. 13. Using scan tool, actuate OD solenoid. Increase engine speed to 1400 RPM. If pressure fluctuates from zero to 75-95 psi (5.3-6.7 kg/cm 2 ), remove pressure gauge and road test vehicle to verify condition is corrected. If pressure is not as specified, overhaul transmission as necessary. See AUTO TRANS OVERHAUL - 41TE/AE & F4AC1 article.
