P0401 code

Exhaust gas recirculation flow insufficient detected. How should I go about this? Steps? Thanks

Hi,

If that is the only code present, chances are there is a carbon build-up issue in the intake or on the EGR itself restricting airflow. If you look at pic 1, column three indicates possible issues. Check the EGR which is on the intake manifold and make sure the vacuum supply to it is good Also, make sure it isn't disconnected or cracked.

Next, if the vacuum is good, remove the EGR and inspect it as well as the intake for carbon issues that can cause the restriction. Note that with the EGR out, you can apply a vacuum to it to see if the pintle moves.

REMOVAL

NOTE: The 4.6L, 4V is shown. The 3.8L and the 4.6L, 2V are similar.

1. Disconnect the vacuum hose.

2. Disconnect the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) tube from the EGR valve.

3. Remove two bolts, the EGR valve and gasket.

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

NOTE:
Install a new gasket.
The 4.6L, 4V is shown. The 3.8L and the 4.6L, 2V are similar.
