Rapid decrease in gas mileage.

I own a 2003 Bravada with the Vortec 4.2L V6 with about 68,000 miles. It has always done decent on gas out on the highway, averaging 21-23 mpg. This last week was the first time I drove it long distances (more than 30 miles) on the freeway since traveling from Colorado to Michigan in late August. On this last trip, my average mpg did not even reach 17! I started watching the instantaneous reading closely, and it seems to jump around irradically on flat roads at a constant speed. I pulled the air filter, and will likely replace it soon. Still, I don't think that this is the sole perpetraitor of this problem, as the filter is not that bad and this came about all of a sudden. I thought maybe an oxygen sensor might be faulty, but would imagine that to trip the check engine light. Any ideas? Thanks so much!

If you are relying on the truck's computer to give accurate readings in that mode. Don't! Fill the car up, zero out the trip meter, then drive, when you need gas again, note how many gallons it takes, then divide that into the miles. If you still think there is a problem, then look at the last time it was tuned up, all filters PCV plugs and wires if any!

Thank you for your quick reply. I realize now that the posting may have been confusingly worded. I have never relied on the instantaneous readout, just was commenting that it fluctuated much more than normal. I got the overall average of 16.8 mpg via the method you described (dividing the gallons into the miles driven). This is the basis for my concern. The reason I wanted to look into any possibilities is that it will not be driven any distance prior to another 1200 mile trip to Colorado in a couple of weeks. I wanted to figure out the problem before I got on the road and am forced to buy outrageously priced gas. Thanks again.
