I have a 1985 Olds Regency Brougham, 3.8 V-6 engine front wheel drive. Although it has a lot of miles it has been very well taken care of. Lately when I come to a stop light the oil light comes on. I know that there is a possibility that the bearings are worn, but I want to put a rebuild kit in the externally mounted oil pump.
I drove the car on blocks and can see that there is very little space between the oil pump cover and axle shaft. Is it possible to install the kit without taking the axle out of the transaxle? Some people say you can but others have a different opinion. I have tried to take two of the oil pump cover mounting bolts out, but the two behind the axle shaft (tripod cover) can't be removed even when the axle is rotated so the indents on the cover are below the bolts. Also, does it make a difference if the car is raised by driving on blocks as I have done or raising the car by supporting the frame so the wheels hang down? Does that give better clearance?
One mechanic quoted me 1.4 hours, saying that it is a tight space but is possible if done right, while another mechanic stated 4.6 hours and claims the axle shaft must be removed.
One of the oil pump gears has a long shaft and I need to replace a spring, install the two gears and mounting bolts while packing the pump with vaseline and installing the gasket. With the high miles it does not pay to stick a lot of money in it but if I can do the install, and solve the problem I have a good work car.

ANY HELP?
