I have a 1985 Olds Cutlass Sierra with only 36,000 miles. It is a 4 cyl. The problem is that the engine keeps dying for the first few minutes after start-up unless I keep my foot on the accelerator and also dies when it is put in gear right away. After engine warms up it idles fine. I don't know if this is related to another problem -- the check engine light does not work at all. Please let me know if you have any ideas ! Thanks !

Check the coolant temp sensor and sending unit, they help mix the fuel to air ratio a little more when cold to assist in cold start up. Check out the IAT after the first thing suggested.

And also the TPS ( throttle postion sensor ) Might also want to check out the idle air control valve and clean it.

IAT is the Intake Air Temperature sensor.

Report all your findings to Mr. B5
