My 93 olds with a 3.1 has cut the gtas milege in half. It starts and runs fine but when going down the road the tach will vary between 1800 and 2500 rpms kinda like the transmission shifts down but that is not the case. It will die once in a while and the only say to start it is to hold it to the floor. It seems maybe to be running rich. Have replaced air filter. Also if you have been driving it a while on the hiway and then when you slow down the check engine light will come on bit if you shut the car off and start it back up it will go away. What could this be?

The first things are the basics, last complete tune up?
If OK, check MAF and TPS. Read the codes when the light is on and post the results. heres how.
Cross these two terminals as shown, then turn the key on. Count the flashes, a 22 will flash as 2 flashes then a short pause, then 2 flashes, if more than one code is stored, the pause will be longer. The codes will display three times and end with 12. Write them down and post here. This connector is right under the middle of the dash...
