how can you tell if the ignition switch solenoid is bad, and where is it located

You mean the starter solenoid. Usually if it goes bad your starter won't work or you can get a click or a kind of vibrating cliiiiiicccccckkkkk sound. It ususally comes with a rebuilt starter.
