Noticed car was consuming a lot of oil, 4 quarts per less than 1,000 miles. Oil mixed with coolant. Took to mechanic, he said not worth fixing may need new engine. Car has 85,000 miles. When it runs, it sounds like it has a grinding sound. Car did overheat and have not run it since so as not to cause major damage to engine.

If the vehicle overheated then I suspect you have a warped head. I find it odd that someone would say it is not worth fixing on such a new vehicle. Did he mean it would be better to just put an engine in it and not repair the current engine or to not repair it at all and get rid of the vehicle?

If it is making a grinding noise as well I suspect you have a larger engine issue. This is why he may be recommending a new engine which would make the most sense.

Here are some guides that help with this issue:

Please let us know what they found wrong with it but if it is as I suspect that the engine overheated, warped the head, caused the coolant and oil to mix which caused a bearing to fail in the engine, which is making the grinding/knocking noise, then I would agree that this needs an engine and it probably would not be worth repairing this current engine.

Let me know if I am missing something. Thanks

Mechanic said rebuilt engine is recommended because of grinding and knock in engine and timing issue. But he does not recommend because he said oil mix with coolant may be another issue (turbo, blown gasket, etc.) All together which could add up cost of repairs. He quoted $1,200.00 for rebuilt engine with 90,000 mile warranty plus labor (approx $1,200.00). Should I take his advice or try to sell car outright as is and what do you think it is worth?

Hello, I'm Danny.

Just to add my 2 cents you will need to factor in everything in the overall condition of your car to justify spending $2,400.00 on a rebuild. How is the overall condition of the exterior, interior, brakes, suspension on the car? If this person quoted you $2,400.00 and holds himself to that price and the 90,000 mile warranty then you might want to consider. Usually Jetta's of that year and mileage are valued at around $10,000.00 to $12,000.00 depending on condition. Something to consider instead of a new car payment. Hope this helps and thanks again for using 2CarPros.

Hi Danny,

The overall condition of the car is good, clean interior, brakes good, new tires just about a year old, exterior good, slight minor dent on left fender, otherwise cosmetically good, suspension good. Thoughts on cost besides rebuilt engine that may be causing oil/coolant mix (gasket, turbo)?

So to Danny's point, if this is the only thing wrong with the car and $2,400.00 will get it back on the road and you like the car then it is worth repairing.

However, if it has been giving you issues with one repair after another and you don't want to keep it then I normally sell it as is and not put the money into. Clearly you will not get as much for it but sometimes it is worth not dealing with the head aches of repair after repair.

The vehicle looks clean so if you like it and doesn't have any other major mechanical issues, then I would fix it.

Hello again.

The car does look to be in good overall condition and still having relatively low mileage. If the mechanic gives you the $2,400.00 deal and that warranty it's not that bad of a deal. Just be sure to get all that in writing. Hard to tell what the exact cause is until disassembly is performed. Let us know what route you end up going and keep us updated. Hope this all helped and thanks again for using 2CarPros.
