1998 Nissan Sentra 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive

I was having trouble with my car starting, I would turn the key and the starter would engage and then stop. I had to do this 2 - 3 times then the car would start. I changed the starter, still have the same problem and now the check engine light has come on, engine idles rough and when you put it in gear the car dies.
