2000 Nissan Maxima Axle Replacement

Took car to dealership for alignment and detected CV Boots torn on both sides. Dealership said that both axles were broken and required replacement. I'm sure they meant the CV Boots. They said that both axle assemblies would have to be replaced. First of all I didn't know that Nissan boots come as an assembly with the axle. Is this true? In addition they told me that I can't get an OEM replacement for this part. Is that true as well? They want to order the part from Advance. I have a friend who runs and Advance Auto, however if I purchase the part at my friend's discount price and have it sent over to the dealership they won't warranty the job. Great huh? $300.00 per side parts and labor is the Dealer's quote to me.

What you want is to bring your own steak to a restuarant, Just not done. The alternative is to repair it yourself. It is also true that if the boots are ripped, you either replace the axle, or dissasemble the old one clean all sand and stuff out, and hope all that grime didnt wear the joint too badly. Standard practice. Replace the whole axle. The only time a brand new part is available today, is on a new car.

Hey Merlin, Thank you for responding to my question. All that you said makes proper sense and it gives me the confidence in knowing that the dealer was trying to do the right thing, although the mechanic told me that they do replace and repack new boots which is contrary to what my service advisor told me. Oh well, it's done and I have peice of mind now. Thanks again!

If a boot is only partially torn, and the customer wants to roll the dice on the joint's condition, that'a true! But the joint still must be removed to do it. Only other option is a split boot, I recommend against them though.
