I was looking to purchase a 1989 Nissan Maxima with 186,000 miles.
It is an automatic and seems not to change gears smoothly after reaching 45 mph. It changes gears at a lower RPM.
The trans fluid looks clean. Is this a serious sign of transmission problems, or can this be fixed?

I would appreciate your response regarding this matter.

Sincerely, Konrad Young

Hi there,

These transmissions should change as smoothe as silk. You will have to get the transmission pressures checked and also do a transmission fault code read. It may be a simple shift solenoid fault or it could go much deeper, as you are only looking, i would consider looking at other vehicles as this may be a hip pocket disaster just waiting to happen.
