1999 Nissan Altima putting in gas

My girlfriends car is spitting out gas when you fill it up. The only way to put gas in it, is to hold the gas lever for 3 to 4 sec MAX, let it go, wait a sec or 2 and repeat. If you hold it more then the 3 to 4 seconds gas will shot out the gas nozel. So pretty much it can take about 10 to 15 min to fill up the car. If you know anything please help and let me know I would appreciate it.

Hi there,

The fuel tank breather system is blocked this is a job for a mechanic as the tank may have to be removed to access the pipe work at the filler if the problem is located there.
