1997 Mitsubishi Galant - Alternator problem?

Hi,
My 1997 Mitsubishi Galant ES didn't start over the weekend. Before the weekend, my car horn stoped working. When I try to start the engine, it was making weird noises and turning on the side/hazard light will make some noise also. We tried to jump start but that didn't help.
WHen I replaced the battery, it started immediately but horn still does not work. Now lights don't make weird noise as well.
Someone told me that, this could be Alternator issue and if I don't fix the alternator, it can cause my new battery to die fast. My old battery was less than 2 Yr. Old. IS it true that bad alternator will damage my new battery? Will I run into any issues if I don't fix it immediateky?
How do I know if this is alternator issue or not? How much should I expect to pay if I get it fixed?
Thanks a bunch.

This is true. The alternator charges the battery when engine is started. Check alternator output. It should rewad between 12 and 14 Volt. If not the alternator must be repaired or replaced. :D :)

Whenever working on the starting charging circuits, all must be done at tthe same time, check starter draw, alternator, regulator and battery, fix all at the same time.
