starter location?

when i turn my key half of the times it just makes the whining noise but the engine will not turn over. sometimes if i just keep turning it the engine will start after a little while of turning the key. some people said that it might be a loose wire on the starter but i don't really know how to fix this problem.

This does sound like the starter is the issue but I don't think it is a loose wire. I suspect this is the solenoid on the starter that is failing.
