2003 Mitsubishi Lancer 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive 137000 miles

I was driving and the car acted as if the timing belt broke.
However, when I took off the shroud, the belt isn't broken, and looks new.
I have had the car for 2 years and have personally put about 30000 miles on it. I don't have any records of maintenance done on the car before I bought it.

What is the engine doing? If the timing belt breaks the engine stalls completely out and then when cranking it will crank much faster than normal. Is the engine running poorly or not starting?
