Hello my name is travis and i just bought a 97 mitsubishi galant from my neighbor and i went to lock the driver door and when i push the button over it shoots back and doesnt lock? how do i fix that?

i have a 98 galant and if u have the key in the ignition and the car is off it wont lock, you can pretty much call it dummy proof. I dont know if its the same for the 97 but i pondered about that the first day after gettting my car as well.
