While driving, my 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse (auto/shiftronic transmission) acted as if it had been bumped into neutral. The shifter was still in gear, but the car wouldn't pull.
It cranks perfectly, and the shifter moves as it should, but it doesn't seem to be in gear. Before it was driving and shifting perfectly. There was no grinding or popping noise when the problem occured. No warning whatsoever.
Five different mechanics have suggested five different things it could be (one even said the whole transmission needed to be replaced -- which I doubt).
What could the problem be? How can I avoid getting screwed at the repair shop?
